Product Description
Plum brandy is a clear alcoholic drink that is consumed in small shots. It is typical for the North region, where this continental fruit is cultivated. Every rural farmstead in the north has at least some plum trees, which are planted and tended primarily for the purpose of brandy production, and there is hardly a household that doesn’t produce its own. It is a part of tradition and local pride, and in every village, locals are always competing whose brandy is the best.
The day of a typical Montenegrin person starts with a shot of brandy – as it is believed it kills microorganisms and fends diseases. A bottle of plum brandy is taken upon visiting friends and neighbours, on gatherings, weddings, funerals and all other social occasions. Being offered a shot of brandy is an inseparable part of Montenegrin hospitality and of any traveller’s experience.
This beverage has a high alcohol content – 50-55%, which when ingested leaves a burning trail through your digestive system. But the delicate flavour and fragrance of plums can be easily detected.
It is produced when ripe plums are collected and stored in large barrels, where they ferment for 2-3 months. The brandy is obtained by the process of alcohol distillation, using old-fashioned distilling equipment of which most households have a set.
