Festival of International Alternative Theatre is a thirty years old fact in the history of Montenegrin theatre. Its concept was created out of the wish to open a completely new space for sharing artistic values. FIAT was created out of original need to transform existing artistic energy into a peculiarity, into a critical mass that would reach the furthest borders in theatre, break the old and examine the new models of onstage expression and all that rising above the foundations of professional and classics.
The beginnings of FIAT are closely related to the 70’s and Podgorica where the first alternative theatre stage DODEST, part of the Youth Center Budo Tomovic, was created. Looking into similar regional and world stages, DODEST started its rough sail over the unsettling seas of the experimental theatre and reached the Festival of Yugoslav Alternative Theatre (FYAT) in the 80’s. Generations remember the alternative stage in Podgorica during the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s as a sort of mythical legend about the times of authentic characters, artists who matured and tried their virtues on small Montenegrin stages, terrace of the Youth Centre, main town square, under the bridges, in local bars, parks…
